From the Desk of Evolution Watches: A Watchmaker’s Personal Perspective
The reason why Evolution Watches came to exist is because I have perpetuated a passion for watchmaking since I was a child. My passion for watch making began with stories which involved tactics of craftsmanship, ingenious feats of engineering, and innovative thinking. Watches such as Omega Speedmaster Professional and Zenith El Primero have always captivated me, not primarily as a means of keeping time, but as emblems which serve as testimony for innovation, risks and milestones on human history.
Rather than being simple competitors, these two chronographs serve as icons which hold different philosophies of watch making. Their legacies are a source of stimulation for me, while I try to fuse heritage and innovation in my own designs at Evolution Watches.
It is important to not only analyze specs of other chronograph watches, but to admire the stories and artistry entwined into their legacy which has rendered them timeless in history.
History & Legacy – How Legends Are Born
Omega Speedmaster Professional: The Moonwatch
To this date, the Omega Speedmaster Professional is the only timepiece which has literally been worn outside of Earth’s atmosphere. It holds the title of the first watch worn on the moon during NASA’s Apollo 11 mission in 1969.
Notorious for its astonishing performance and astounding ruggedness, the accuracy-challenged Speedmaster racing chronograph was introduced in 1957. NASA’s terrifying series of evaluations, for which the chronograph was branded as an accessory, put the accuracy of the watch to test and deemed it worthy for all phases of human spaceflight.
Even today, the chronograph is a watch of space enthusiasts symbolizing adventure, exploration, and achievement of human milestones.
Zenith El Primero: The First Automatic Chronograph
The Zenith El Primero holds the title of the first automatic chronograph. Alongside the speed masters, the Zenith underwent a revolution in 1969 as they launched a high-frequency movement capable of measuring time with staggering precision up to 1/10th of a second, crowning them as the manufacturers of the world’s most advanced integrated automatic chronograph movement.
As other brands focused their efforts towards adding modules onto their preexisting frameworks, Zenith had already conquered the horological dominion with their 36,000 vibrations per hour movement.
Winning the title decently earned the El Primero as a technological wonder, was unmatched in the world of mechanical timekeeping, the integrated Zenith chronograph not only powered the brand’s watches but went on to propel vintage Rolex Daytonas.
In comparison to the Speedmaster, the El Primero certainly elevated its status as the court judge for chronograph supremacy. Despite the alternating reigns of competing brands, it is certain the astable ranged constructors for Zenith claimed mastery over the chronographic frame of Zenith multiple times.
Classic and bold redefine the terms regarding design and aesthetics, while the Speedmaster watch is truly a timeless accessory meant for the professional. The subjective tastes of people are the only thing restraining them to deem singular objects universally attractive.
A monument of the horology world, the Zenith managed to remain mounted on their frame for countless years which marks a point of glamor showcasing decades of undefeated status among other rigid altering horology brands. The design, which is highly sought after by many, did not alter the ergonomics of the watch claiming mastery for eras.
Design & Aesthetic – Classic vs Bold
Rugged and tearing marks of time signifies the El Primero alongside its advanced integrated chronograph, powerful enough to withstand endless competitions from other prefab watch makers.
- 42 mm stainless-steel case
- Black dial with white sub-dials
- Clearly marked and uncluttered display
- Hesalite crystal (or sapphire in modern versions)
- Speed measurement tachymetric bezel
The versatility of the watch is unparalleled—it is tough enough for rugged space missions, and elegant enough for daily wear. The watch’s design has a deep connection to history and purpose without being ostentatious.
Zenith El Primero: Distincitive and Vibrant
Zenith took a very different design path with the El Primero.
- 38 mm stainless-steel case (classic models)
- Tri-colored audacious sub-dials
- Bold Domed sapphire
- Tachymeter around the edge
- Vintage style with modern touch
With its bursts of color and more energetic layout, the El Primero is more dynamic than the Speedmaster. Unlike other chronographs, this one easily appeals to anyone looking for a tad over the top style.
